![]() I struggle with this because it is hard to overcome the very human tendency of focusing on your family's success vs. And for that to happen, the more educated and enlightened population must see an opportunity, have some empathy and take an interest. For poor neighborhoods to improve, change must come from within the culture and from the value of real estate. The reason why more affluent neighborhoods have better schools is a combination of property taxes (schools are financed primarily at the state and local level), and culture (more educated parents demand performance from their kids). This study makes sense but I don't think it really offers great policy recommendations. And it is why I will not send my son to public schools in Washington D.C. I experienced this first-hand when I went from private to public school. And if you go to school in a sub-par place where you are devalued for being ambitious, intelligent or intellectually curious, you will never be competitive or aspire for more. Brain science shows that teens and youth are wired to be accepted by their peers. Who you go to school with matters greatly in school performance.
